How Important Is Automotive Recycling?

Automotive components have scrap value, from the body of the car to the inner workings and down to the spark plugs. Aluminum, steel, cast iron, brass, and precious metals are examples of scrap metals. Some automotive components have a monetary value when recycled. While some recyclable components do not generate much money, they all help the environment. A common recycled vehicle component is the catalytic converter. The availability of precious metals in a catalytic converter determines its economic value. It is abundant in precious metals like rhodium, palladium, and platinum. As a result, they are the most expensive automotive scrap component.

Why Recycling Automotive Scrap Is Crucial For Our EnvironmentAutomotive Recycling

There are numerous environmental advantages to recycling, particularly in the car industry. This is due to the fact that many of the components required for vehicle manufacturing are difficult to source in an environmentally friendly manner. Recycling and reusing vehicle materials contribute significantly to waste reduction. These recycling efforts also have a large effect on other industries. Recycled steel, for example, contributes to energy savings in the steel manufacturing industry. Another example of how the automotive recycling industry influences other industries is the use of precious metals such as platinum in the jewelry industry.

Globally around 27 million cars are recycled each year when they reach the end of their useful life making the automotive recycling industry one of the largest industries in the world. Every year, the vehicle recycling industry in the United States and Canada generates enough steel to make almost 13 million new cars. As we face environmental challenges, this is of critical importance because the production of new metal releases more greenhouse gas emissions than the recycling process. In the same vein, recycling scrap metals requires far less energy and water than mining ore.

Overall automotive recycling is extremely important to the circular economy by combating global warming by lowering greenhouse gas emissions while also helping preserve the planet’s natural resources.
