Will Aftermarket Catalytic Converters Pass Emissions?

Catalytic converters are an important part in all modern vehicles. They are designed to aid in the reduction of emissions and the preservation of clean air. Catalytic converters become worn and less effective over time. Aftermarket catalytic converters come into play when the original equipment manufacturer (OEM) converter needs to be replaced. There are some key differences between OEM and aftermarket catalytic converters, but as a driver in need of a replacement, they tend to prefer the aftermarket due to the lower cost. Although many drivers at this stage are concerned about whether an aftermarket catalytic converter will pass emissions tests.

Many aftermarkets catalytic converters will meet emissions standards. These converters are frequently less expensive than original equipment manufacturer (OEM) converters, which can be a significant selling point for many drivers. However, it is critical to conduct thorough research to ensure that the converter you select meets the emissions standards for your specific vehicle. It is not just the manufacture type to investigate, make sure you select the converter right for your specific make, model, year, and in some cases engine type.

It’s also worth noting that some states have more stringent emissions regulations than others. California, for example, has the strictest emissions standards in the country, and vehicles registered in California must have CARB-certified catalytic converters (by the California Air Resources Board). Other states’ requirements may be less stringent.

Another critical consideration is the installation of an aftermarket catalytic converter. It is critical that the converter be properly installed, with all necessary connections and components in place. Even if the converter is designed to meet emissions standards, if it is not installed properly, it may not be able to reduce emissions effectively.
